Methods of Placenta Encapsulation

I offer two placenta encapsulation methods, and you can choose the one that best aligns with your needs—or even opt for a half-and-half preparation. Both methods provide incredible benefits, but they differ in how they affect the body postpartum.

Raw Foods Method

  • Tends to have a higher yield of capsules

  • More potent in hormones and nutrients

  • Can feel energizing and stimulating

⚠️ Not recommended if you have a history of anxiety, jitters, insomnia, or mood disorders, as the potency can feel overwhelming.

With the Raw Foods Method, the placenta is sliced, dehydrated, and encapsulated without being steamed or heated beforehand.

I only prepare a placenta using this method within 24 hours of birth to maintain its integrity.

Why Choose the Raw Method?

Raw food advocates believe that heating the placenta reduces some of its nutrients. By keeping the temperature below 118°F throughout most of the process, this method aims to preserve as many nutrients, hormones, and enzymes as possible.

For safety, the placenta must be dehydrated at 160°F for the first four hours; therefore, I technically refer to this method as the “Semi-Raw” method.

Heated Method (TCM-Inspired)

  • More grounding & stabilizing – If you are prone to anxiety, insomnia, or feeling overwhelmed, this method may be better suited for you.

  • Balances postpartum Qi (energy) & blood flow – Encourages uterine healing, replenishes energy, and supports emotional well-being.

The heated method is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles and involves gently steaming the placenta before dehydration.

This can be done with or without fresh ginger, which is traditionally used to add a warming, circulation-boosting effect.

Why Choose the Heated Method?

TCM teaches that birth depletes warmth (Yang energy) and blood from the body, leaving new mothers in a cold, deficient state (excess Yin).

By steaming the placenta before encapsulation, this method enhances warmth, promotes circulation, and supports postpartum healing.

Traditional Chinese Medicine & Postpartum Healing

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, health is maintained through balance, and disease is prevented by keeping the body in harmony. This principle applies not just to individuals but to society as a whole.

For thousands of years, the placenta has been used in Chinese medicine to restore balance after childbirth. It is believed to replenish lost Qi (vital energy), nourish blood, and aid emotional stability. Historically, placenta was given for all forms of depression in both men and women, similar to how modern medicine now prescribes antidepressants.

Understanding Yin & Yang in Postpartum Recovery

After birth, a mother’s body is considered to be in a state of excess Yin (cold, depleted, stillness) and requires warming, blood-building foods to restore balance. When Qi and blood are weakened, common postpartum symptoms may arise, including:

  • Fatigue

  • Emotional instability

  • Difficulty healing

  • Insomnia

  • Cold hands and feet

Warming, nourishing foods—such as cooked meals, ginger, and even placenta capsules—help rebuild Qi, circulate blood, and restore balance. Keeping the body warm and well-nourished is one of the key principles of postpartum care in TCM.

By choosing placenta encapsulation, you are supporting your body in a natural, holistic way that has been used for generations.
